Description
Founded more than 200 years ago, Finca Armenia Lorena has a deep legacy in the region. The farm had been passed down from generation to generation, and has been maintained with a care that’s obvious to visitors, with many historic structures and implements still intact. Despite the farm’s rich legacy, Doña Sofia and her staff have adapted to innovative processing methods and data-driven farming approaches. The farm is large, and is separated into plots by elevation. Varieties grown on various small lots include Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Pacamara, Geisha, and for certified organics Anacafe 14 and Sarchimor. Armenia Lorena produces mainly washed coffees, utilizing processes and tools developed in Colombia. Because of the warmer San Marcos climate, parchment is dried under canopies to maintain more even temperatures for 8-9 dry days, up to 15 days with rain. The farm boasts an historic small dairy farm as well, which provides organic fertilizer for the coffee plants. The farm also generates its own solar electricity.
When asked what makes her farm special, Doña Sofia said:
“Everything. The altitudes, the terroir, the passion of the family and staff … We are a family passionate about coffee growing and our country. We’re very proud of our product, and are adapting to new techniques while being respectful of nature, with protected areas of fauna and flora and with a strong program of forests in our mountainous areas.”
