Farm to Cup

OUR STORY

Every great adventure starts with a little bit of curiosity—and in our case, a deep, shared obsession with a great cup of coffee.

One of us grew up in a coffee-growing region in Southeast coastal India, meaning a quiet connection to the bean was always in our DNA. For a long time, though, we actually stopped drinking commercial coffee. The big chains kept serving what we playfully called “coffee coal”—burnt, bitter roasts that mask the true flavor of the bean.

That all changed in 2014, just before we got married. We discovered “third-wave” craft coffee, fell head-over-heels in love with it, and were completely blown away by the complex, fruity, and floral tasting profiles. Before we knew it, we were buying raw green beans, roasting them ourselves at home, and experimenting with every brewing method we could get our hands on.

Our ultimate dream quickly became clear: we wanted to visit coffee farms around the world to see how this magic actually happened at the source. Since we were living in the US, we looked for somewhere close enough for a short flight. That’s how we landed on Guatemala.

The Last-Minute Trip (Before the World Changed)
It was March 2020, right on the brink of the global pandemic. Armed with a lot of determination and research, we somehow managed to track down contacts for a small, family-owned green coffee exporter in Guatemala. We booked our flights at the absolute last minute.

The catch? We weren’t an official business yet. Usually, these raw, non-touristy farm trips are strictly reserved for coffee industry professionals. But the exporter was run by an incredibly kind group of people. They saw our genuine passion and allowed us to tag along with an amazing group of professional roasters and green coffee buyers for a small fee to cover our food and travel for four days.

We had no idea that one week would change the trajectory of our lives forever.

An Eye-Opening Reality
Traveling deep into the northern mountains of Huehuetenango was a beautiful but heartbreaking experience. We watched farmers navigating steep, treacherous mountain faces to pick coffee cherries—and most of them didn’t even have proper footwear.

It hit me so hard. These families are quite literally bringing light to our mornings, yet they were living such limited, minimal lives. Can you imagine a world without coffee? We certainly couldn’t. Yet, because middlemen often buy coffee at devastatingly low prices, many communities can no longer afford to survive. Families are forced to abandon their ancestral farms just to make a living.

We realized that if this continues, real coffee will disappear. We will be left with coffee grown in unhealthy, artificial labs, losing the magic that only specific altitudes and temperatures can create. Even with one of us growing up around coffee regions, we realized we had never fully focused on the main person behind our daily cup. Coffee is expensive in stores, but the money rarely reaches the soil.

We came back to the States deeply moved. Then, the pandemic hit, turning everyone’s life upside down. But as things slowly normalized, we knew we couldn’t just forget what we saw. We had to act.

Our Manifesto: Happy Farmer, Happy Cup
I started Cracked Bean Coffee Co. as a micro-roastery with a strict, shared mission: buy our green coffee directly from the farms, cut out the middlemen, and pay the farmers well above market price. We actively encourage them to grow micro-lots (small, high-quality batches) so they can take pride in their craft and earn what they truly deserve.

We also wanted to prove a point to our community. We initially priced our coffee at an ultra-lean margin—just $1 per ounce, making a fresh cup cost about $0.50. We wanted to show a larger crowd the sheer greatness of a well-farmed bean, while giving those mountain farmers real hope for a better future.

(A quick note of transparency: due to recent hikes in packaging materials and fuel costs affecting our logistics partners, we’ve had to add a modest $1.50 to our 12oz bags and $1.00 to our 16oz bags just to keep the mission sustainable!)

At the end of the day, our philosophy is simple: Happy Farmer, Happy Crop, Happy Cup. It’s a win-win for the people who grow it, and for those of us who can’t imagine a morning without it.

Thank you for supporting the hands behind the harvest.
Warmly,
The Cracked Bean Coffee Co.
